Restructuring, elevation, and extension of a residential house in the historic center of Honfleur.
Enhancing the Heritage of the Small Houses of Honfleur
Located in the protected area of the historic heart of Honfleur, this small house, nestled on a plot with a hidden garden behind beautiful flint walls, has undergone an ambitious project of restructuring, elevation, and extension. Completed in 2025 for a private client, this operation has profoundly transformed the residence while respecting the charm and identity of the place.
A Characterful House with Remarkable Potential
Nestled in the heart of the historic center of Honfleur, this house had an exceptional setting, particularly due to its landscaped garden hidden behind magnificent flint walls. It was waiting for the impetus of a project that was both controlled and bold to reveal its full potential.
The main challenge was to address the lack of living space while integrating the new interventions into a particularly sensitive heritage environment.
Creating New Spaces Through Elevation and Extension
To increase the living areas, the project was designed around two major axes: an elevation and an extension. These interventions allowed for the creation of new living volumes, better suited to the client's expectations, while maintaining architectural coherence with the existing structure.
The design work aimed to seamlessly integrate these new constructions, seeking a balance between functionality, elegance, and respect for the historical context.
A Winter Garden Open to the Landscape
Among the key elements of the project, a winter garden was created as an extension to provide a new living space. This volume allows for full enjoyment of the unique and privileged views of the landscaped garden, while bringing light, comfort, and quality of use to daily life.
This space serves as a true link between the interior of the house and the exterior, strengthening the relationship between the residence and its green surroundings.
A Comprehensive Interior and Exterior Restructuring
The execution of the project required extensive restructuring, both inside and outside. These works were essential to enable the completion of the elevated and extended constructions, as well as to rethink the overall organization of the house.
This profound transformation has optimized the volumes, improved circulation between spaces, and resulted in a more comfortable, harmonious residence adapted to contemporary uses.
Particular Care Given to Materials and Facades
Special attention was paid to the choice of new exterior joinery as well as the colors of the facades. The colors were selected in a harmony of off-whites and light sienna, to place the project within a soft, elegant palette perfectly suited to the spirit of the place.
The project also prioritized the use of natural and sustainable materials: oak for the framing and structure, hemp concrete for the infill, solid bricks for the cladding, a mineral-based exterior paint, as well as tile, slate, and natural zinc for the various roofs.
A Realization True to the Client's Expectations
Thanks to this comprehensive approach, combining restructuring, expansion, demanding material choices, and attention to overall aesthetics, the project fully met the client's expectations.
This realization illustrates the possibility of evolving an old house located in a sensitive heritage context, while enhancing its character, improving its comfort, and strengthening its connection with its garden and environment.
