Manor of the Park in Honfleur: restoration and elevation of a 19th-century manor house

On the heights of Honfleur, the Manoir du Parc has undergone an ambitious project of interior and exterior restoration, accompanied by an elevation designed in respect of its original architecture. Completed in 2012 for a private client, this project illustrates a sensitive approach to heritage, balancing the enhancement of the existing, adaptation to contemporary uses, and integration into an exceptional site.

A 19th-century manor preserved in its original state

When the new owners acquired this 19th-century manor, it had retained its original state. This authenticity represented both a heritage asset and a genuine architectural challenge. The goal was to preserve the soul of the place while giving it a new lease of life, capable of meeting the expectations of a modern lifestyle.

From the initial studies, it was essential to fully grasp the existing elements: proportions, materials, facade composition, and the relationship of the building with its landscaped environment. The objective was not only to restore but to enhance the manor within its green setting.

A remarkable site overlooking the Seine estuary

Set in a wooded park with century-old trees, the manor enjoys an exceptional location overlooking the Seine estuary. This remarkable natural setting guided the entire architectural reflection.

The project focused on enhancing the dialogue between the building and its landscape. It aimed to further reveal the quality of the site, allowing residents to fully enjoy the views offered through the trees towards the estuary.

Restoring presence to the estuary-facing facade

The facade facing the estuary originally had few openings, limiting the relationship between the interior spaces and this exceptional panorama. One of the strong ideas of the project was to give this facade a true architectural existence.

To achieve this, a continuous balcony was created along the entire length of the facade. This new element was accompanied by the installation of French doors, widely opening the rooms to the landscape. This intervention profoundly transforms the experience of the place: natural light enters more abundantly, views unfold, and the manor regains a new breath in direct connection with its environment.

Creating new living spaces without extension

The program also required the creation of additional surfaces. However, regulatory constraints prohibited any ground extension according to the current urban planning regulations. Faced with this limitation, the project found its solution in the elevation of the existing parts.

This strategy allowed for the development of new living spaces while respecting the regulatory framework. The elevation was not conceived as a visible addition or a break, but as a natural evolution of the building, carefully integrated into its volume and architectural expression.

A complete restoration of the facades

In addition to these interventions, all the facades underwent a complete restoration. This work allowed the manor to regain its presence and elegance, respecting the characteristics of its original architecture.

Material choices were made with particular attention, especially for the elevated parts. The goal was to ensure perfect coherence between the existing and the new interventions, so that the whole fits accurately into the history of the building.

A project between heritage and reinvention

This restoration and elevation project of the Manoir du Parc in Honfleur illustrates an architectural approach based on balance: preserving the character of an old building, revealing its qualities, and adapting it with finesse to contemporary needs.

By enhancing the facades, opening the manor to the landscape, and creating new volumes while respecting urban constraints, this achievement demonstrates how heritage can be reinvented without ever losing its identity.
